June Caines

June Caines and her husband moved to Fairfield after the war. During her 14 years as a member of the Fairfield Arts Society she has been both president and secretary.

I must admit I was appalled when I first saw Fairfield. It was mostly scrub. There were a minimal amount of shops. They just ran along the Crescent and then you went up Ware Street and there was a Post Office and not much else. And… the shops were staffed by people who had become very independent-minded during the war when there were great shortages and they'd say things like, "that's all we’ve got," you know, in that sort of a take-it-or-leave-it attitude.
