Chris Ryan

Chris Ryan attended school and played sport in and around the Fairfield area. During his school years he was fortunate to be amongst children from other countries which enriched his adolescence.

... going to university was a fairly expensive option. And at that stage a lot of people who were from a classic working class background, the means to get to university was often either what was called a Commonwealth Scholarship or a teaching scholarship. And I took a teaching scholarship which meant I was then obligated to work as a teacher and… I don't think I could have afforded to have gone to a university any other way. I was the first person of my… in my personal family history to complete secondary schooling and go directly to university and there were a large number of students who I mixed with who were in the same situation. Who were being given an opportunity and took that opportunity and progressed from there.
