Nick Lalich

Nick Lalich and his family migrated to Australia in 1948. He has been a Councillor and Mayor of Fairfield since 1992. He was the last Mayor to be elected by his colleagues and the first elected by popular vote.

.. my mum learnt English and my mum was really the one who sort of — did all the speaking when they went out everywhere. And my mum was a lot more interested in what was going on. My dad … didn't care too much for politics because of the problems back in Yugoslavia between Croatians and Serbs (Serbians) during the Second World War. And his attitude was your better off to keep away from all that. We’ve come to a new country, forget about all of the issues over there. Come here and start a new life and forget about all the problems that were going on.
