Thi My Le immigrated to Australia from Vietnam. She became a visual artist with the help of her Australian mother and through her own determination
The manager at that women's shelter and now my Australian mother, she saw me doing drawings. She said, ‘oh my god you could draw,’ you know. And so she enrolled me to the fine arts course. At that time I couldn't speak English and so she did all the talking for me during the interview. I had no idea what she was talking about, I just saw her showing them the drawings and portraits of the people I stayed with, I did the portrait from life. And the head of the fine arts department just kept nodding his head and they were smiling and I thought, it's probably okay you know, probably I was doing all right. So they, that's how I started the fine arts course.
