Shirley McLeod

Shirley McLeod spent her first 21 years in Fairfield. She had alot of involvement with the different nationalities of the area and is a volunteer for 'The Way we Were' project.

we had a lot of migrants come out here. We already, in Smithfield, had some Italians. Some of whom were interned during the war. We had Maltese, who were British subjects anyway. We had three Chinese families and not much else. The rest of us were Australian or maybe Britishers. I worked at Homebush Abattoirs and that was a government place where when the migrants were brought out as assisted migrants they had to work for the government for two years that was part of the deal.
