George Lee’s family ran a tannery in Smithfield. He attended Smithfield Public School and also took part in concerts held during the war.
during the Second World War dad had dug this big trench, war trench in the backyard. I remember that. Mighty thing in those days probably wasn’t as big as what we thought it was because not being so tall in those days it probably looked very deep. Then I remember all the windows of the house, had sticky tape across all the glass in the windows and we had blankets.
Q: At the school as well.
At the school, blankets, all the windows were blacked out in case we, there were air raids. And of course we did have these mock air raid where the siren would go and the lights had to be put out and things like that, but we were lucky that they never got to us.
